Born in Rambouillet, Louis-Jean-Marie de Bourbon, duke de Penthièvre, was the son of the count of Toulouse and served as admiral (1734) and as governor of Brittany, distinguishing himself particularly at the Battle of Fontenoy (1745). Possessed of an immense fortune and known as a patron of the arts, he was the father of louise-marie Adelaide, who married the duke d'orléans (philippe égalité). He also had a son, the prince of Lamballe (died 1768), whose wife, Marie-Thérèse, was killed in the September massacres (1792) during the revolution of 1789.
